UN(AMet) Day: Introductory Meeting 27/10/2010

For those of you who sadly couldn't make our first introductory event of the year, here's a short run-down of what we did...

First, Alex gave a short presentation on the United Nations and its organs, talking briefly about various things such as voting procedures, where the UN gets its funding from, UN agencies (WHO, UNDP, UNIFEM and UNICEF) and then some criticisms of the UN.

This was followed by a UN quiz, in which two teams battled it out for the chocolatey prize on offer! Team Apollo snatched victory, but only just - they won by 1 point, and shared the box of Celebrations with the runners up. 'Sharing is Caring' after all!

After testing our knowledge of the UN with the quiz, Lene provided a short presentation on what UNAMet actually does. This included a bit about our affiliation with UNYSA - the youth wing of the United Nations Association UK - and what they do, such as their current campaign on nuclear disarmament (called 'Towards Zero'). So, what does UNAMet actually do? We hold events, host guest speakers, have film screenings, debates, presentations, send delegations to Model United Nations conferences, and hold MUN workshops, AND are hoping to build campaigns in the future.

In case of confusion, Billie provided a short explanation of what a Model United Nations conference actually was and how attending one might benefit you - academically, professionally, and personally!

Last, but not least, Pilar gave a brief summary of our upcoming events... the MUN workshops, NottsMUN, Jeff Haynes' talk on religion in IR, We the Peoples Film Festival film screenings, LiMUN and a Christmas Party! - We'll keep you posted!
